Finding the Right EHR for Your Mac-Based Medical Practice

Finding the Right EHR for Your Mac-Based Medical Practice

Apple has clearly made it's mark in the consumer world. When was the last time you saw someone with a mobile device other than an iPhone? They are also gaining notoriety in other markets, such as healthcare. Hospitals and physicians are beginning to run their practices on Apple devices. Those that do are also looking for vendors - like ehr companies - that make software to run on their Mac OS X system. However, the medical software industry has been slow to develop such programs. We were only able to identify 20 EHR and practice management systems developed for the Mac. Fortunately, there is an abundance of web-based EMR systems that provide sophisticated functionality no matter what operating system you are using.

Below are a few web-based EHR's that we like.

NueMD Complete

- Available for multiple specialties

- Number of providers: 1-5

- ONC-ATB certified

- Provides both EMR and practice management capabilities

- Differentiator: Internet-based architecture that allows users to access the system through a direct Internet connection rather than using a browser.

AllegianceMD

- Available for multiple specialties

- Number of providers: 1-10

- Not ONC-ATB certified

- Provides both EMR and practice management capabilities

- Differentiator: The vendor guarantees 99.9% availability of their system.

Valant

- Designed for correctional health, psychiatry and psychology

- Number of providers: 1-25

- ONC-ATB certified

- Provides both EMR and practice management capabilities

- Differentiator: The system meets meaningful use standards, so users can qualify for stimulus subsidies.

The benefits of using a web-based system over traditional on-premise software are clear: lower up front cost, less IT maintenance; access from any device with Internet connection; data hosted in the cloud; access via any supported browser (i.e. Firefox).

Some vendors have created software designed specifically for Apple's browser, Safari. One of our favorites is listed below

MeridianEMR

- Designed for bariatrics/obesity, general surgery and urology

- Number of providers: 1-50+

- ONC-ATB certified

- Provides EMR capabilities

- Differentiator: The UROAnalytics module allows providers to analyze patient EHR data for trends that can be compared to other MeridianEHR network providers in your region and across the nation.

These are just a sampling of products. For our full list of EHR systems for the Mac, check out Mac EMR Software | 2011 Guide to Medical Software for Apple Computers.
